Hi, so I have mentioned in a previous post that I wanted to extend on what makes writing personal. How can writing slow make you understand yourself more as a person and discovering an experience.
At least, that’s how I found myself when there is some form of benefit about writing at a pace that is slow enough to convey your own ideas clearly, but also quick, so you can make sure to convey your ideas and the vision that you have for your story without dragging it for too long.
Perspectives and characters
When I think of writing like this, I suppose it is like journaling in a different lens. Your characters are the people that you want to explore within the themes of your story and the ideas that you have been experiencing throughout your life.
Fate, love, hate, propaganda… Royalty under disguise. It could be whatever you want. When creating stories, I imagine that it’s about writing something that you like to explore. Heck, even living flowers wanting to destroy the world can be your type of thing. Or maybe not.
But case of point: It helps you explore the things that matter to you. And this can help you understand what a particular topic means.
Discovery of the self
Sometimes throughout the writing, I find myself sort of making sense of the characters and the potential worlds that I create and what it could mean.
Now, there are certain characteristics that I like to lean towards when I am creating my characters. Most of them, you don’t realise when you first write it, but I would like to say that a part of an author’s voice, is when you are bring the experiences, perspective and tk to it and make people relate to the words that you have to say. The story that you want to write.
Lots of what you may write: could be unprocessed trauma, or some form of free space where you are trying to understand the situation that you are currently in at this point of time in your life. But of course, the positive childhood memories could also be another way where you are trying to understand the memories that you have faced all of your life.
Now writing alone doesn’t have to be a slow process, it is also reflective of the story that you want to convey.
Pausing in prose
Sometimes, pausing, just to know what you are writing about helps in making sure that you can convey the message correctly. Even if the way it is conveyed is not perfect at first.
To take the consideration of the environment you are in, the theme you want to convey. Whether you are writing the characters to how they would actually respond. There are a variety of factors that benefits your story when you work in a place of reflection over working fast. But as with slow having it’s benefits, faster does have it’s benfits, along with disadvantages as they both do.
Questioning yourself as a writer?
Sometimes it really is good to take the time to slow down and ask those questions which can help better understand not just yourself as a writer, but to understand the story you want to write about.
